Anal fistula treatment in Vijayawada | Dr. Naresh Veeranki

A small opening near the anus that keeps leaking pus or blood, often after a boil that burst, is usually a fistula. It won't heal on its own, but modern sphincter-saving techniques treat it without harming bowel control.

A word from Dr. Naresh

Most patients who come to me with piles, fissures or fistulas have put it off for months, sometimes years. Embarrassment is one reason. Fear of a painful operation is the other. I understand both.

These conditions are extremely common, the examination is quick and private, and many people don't need surgery at all. When they do, laser and modern techniques make recovery far easier than most people expect.

What is anal fistula treatment?

A small opening near the anus that keeps leaking. Sphincter-saving options available. A fistula is a tunnel between the inside of the anal canal and the skin.

How it's treated, from simplest to most involved

  1. 1

    Fistulotomy

Laying open a simple, low fistula. High success when very little muscle is involved.

  2. 2

    Laser fistula closure (FiLaC)

A laser fibre seals the tunnel from inside, preserving the sphincter muscle.

  3. 3

    Seton

A soft thread through the tunnel drains infection and gradually treats complex fistulas.

  4. 4

    Fistulectomy or advancement flap

Removes the tract or closes the inner opening, for selected complex cases.

The complete guide: everything you need to know

Everything you need to know about anal fistula treatment, in one place.

1Are you an ideal candidate for anal fistula treatment?

Suitability is decided at an in-person examination, with a review of your history and reports.

You may benefit if

  • Recurring discharge of pus, blood or fluid that stains underwear
  • A small opening or pimple-like spot near the anus
  • Pain and swelling that builds up and eases when it drains
  • A past anal abscess that was drained or burst
  • Irritated skin around the anus

When to wait or plan carefully

  • You have an active infection or fever that needs treating first
  • You're pregnant; many of these problems are managed without surgery until after delivery
  • Blood sugar or blood thinners need adjusting before a procedure
2Step-by-step: how it is done
  1. 1

    Before

Basic blood tests and an anaesthesia check. You'll usually be asked not to eat for 6 hours, and may be given a simple enema or laxative.

  2. 2

    Admission

Arrive at the time given. The team confirms your consent and answers any last questions.

  3. 3

    The procedure

Usually under spinal or short general anaesthesia, typically 20 to 45 minutes.

  4. 4

    Going home

Most people go home the same day or the next morning with pain relief, stool softeners and sitz-bath instructions.

3Day-by-day recovery timeline and what to expect
TimelineWhat you'll feelActivity allowedCare
First weekMild discharge and soreness. Sitz baths and dressings as advised.Walk around at home; short sitting spells with a cushionSitz baths 2 to 3 times a day and after motions
2 to 4 weeksDischarge steadily reduces as the tract heals.Desk work, light housework and short drivesHigh-fibre diet, 2 to 3 litres of water, daily stool softener
6 to 12 weeksComplete healing for most people; longer for complex fistulas, with regular reviews.Normal activity; exercise once comfortableNo straining or long spells on the toilet

Typical timelines. Dr. Naresh will give you one for your own procedure, health and job.

What affects the cost

  • Type of treatment. Medicines, a clinic procedure, laser, keyhole or open surgery each cost differently.
  • Hospital and room. Day-care, general ward or private room changes the total.
  • Tests and scans. Blood tests, ultrasound or CT, only if they're needed and not already done.
  • Anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia costs less than spinal or general.
  • Health insurance. Most policies cover these treatments; waiting periods and room limits vary.

6Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why does it keep coming back after antibiotics?

A fistula is a tunnel between the inside of the anal canal and the skin. Antibiotics settle the infection for a while, but the tunnel remains, so discharge returns. Closing or removing the tunnel is the only permanent fix.

Will surgery affect my control of motions?

This is the most important concern, and the reason planning matters. Simple, low fistulas can be laid open safely. Complex fistulas that pass through more muscle are treated with sphincter-saving methods such as laser closure or a seton.

Do I need an MRI?

For recurrent or complex fistulas, an MRI maps the tunnel and any branches so none is missed. For simple fistulas, examination alone may be enough.

How many surgeries will I need?

Simple fistulas are usually treated in one procedure. Complex ones sometimes need a staged approach, starting with a seton. You'll know the plan in advance.

Is a fistula dangerous if left untreated?

It can cause repeated abscesses and, over years, more branches that make treatment harder. Treating it early is simpler.

Can I work with a seton in place?

Yes. Most people carry on with normal work and activity.

Can Crohn's disease cause fistulas?

Yes. If you also have abdominal symptoms, weight loss or several fistulas, tests for Crohn's disease may be suggested, as it needs a different approach.

What is the cost of fistula treatment in Vijayawada?

The cost depends on the treatment you need, the hospital and room type, any tests, and the anaesthesia used. Dr. Naresh Veeranki gives a clear, itemised estimate after examination, before anything is booked, and most health insurance policies cover anal fistula treatment. Call or WhatsApp +91 83338 26666 for an estimate.
