Bleeding or pain when passing stool
Bright red blood and a swelling are usually piles. Sharp pain that lingers after motions points to a fissure. Both are very treatable, often without surgery.
If you're over 40, or have lost weight or noticed a change in bowel habit, mention it; the doctor may advise a colonoscopy.

Discharge or a boil near the anus or tailbone
A leaking opening near the anus is often a fistula. A painful swelling at the top of the buttock cleft is usually a pilonidal sinus. A hot, painful lump may be an abscess that needs draining.
Fever with a painful swelling needs to be seen the same day.

A swelling that grows when you stand or cough and goes away when you lie down is usually a hernia. It won't heal by itself, but planned repair is routine.

Soft, moving lumps are usually lipomas. Round lumps with a small dark dot are often cysts. Most are harmless, and removal is a short procedure under local anaesthesia.
Get a lump checked sooner if it's growing fast, hard, or fixed in place.
