A word from Dr. Naresh

Not every surgical problem needs a hospital stay. Ingrown nails, small cysts, abscesses and cuts can usually be treated in a short visit under local anaesthesia.

My aim is to make these procedures quick, comfortable and clearly explained, so you're back to your day with simple instructions and a clear follow-up plan.

    Incision and drainage

A small cut releases the pus, and the cavity is cleaned.

    Treating the cause

Removing a cyst or treating a fistula to stop it coming back.

The complete guide: everything you need to know

Everything you need to know about abscess drainage, in one place.

1Are you an ideal candidate for abscess drainage?

Suitability is decided at an in-person examination, with a review of your history and reports.

You may benefit if

  • A red, hot, painful swelling that's getting bigger
  • Throbbing pain, often worse at night
  • A soft centre or a yellow or white head
  • Fever or feeling unwell
  • Common in the armpit, buttocks, groin, breast and around the anus

When to wait or plan carefully

  • An infection that needs settling first
  • Blood thinners that need a plan before the procedure
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, which slows healing
2Step-by-step: how it is done
  1. 1

    Check-in

The doctor examines the area and confirms the plan with you.

  2. 2

    Numbing

Local anaesthetic stings for a few seconds, then the area goes numb. No fasting is needed for local anaesthesia.

  3. 3

    The procedure

    Usually 15 to 45 minutes.

  4. 4

    Going home

Straight after, with a dressing and written care instructions.

What affects the cost

  • Type of treatment. Medicines, a clinic procedure, laser, keyhole or open surgery each cost differently.
  • Hospital and room. Day-care, general ward or private room changes the total.
  • Tests and scans. Blood tests, ultrasound or CT, only if they're needed and not already done.
  • Anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia costs less than spinal or general.
  • Health insurance. Most policies cover these treatments; waiting periods and room limits vary.

6Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why can't antibiotics clear it?

Antibiotics don't penetrate well into a collection of pus. Once pus has formed, it needs draining; antibiotics are added if infection is spreading.

Will it hurt?

The area is numbed first, or a short anaesthetic is given. Most people feel much better straight afterwards because the pressure is released.

Why is the wound left open?

Leaving it open with a light pack lets the remaining pus drain and the wound heal from the bottom up, which stops the abscess reforming.

Why do I keep getting abscesses?

Repeated abscesses can point to diabetes, a fistula (if near the anus), a cyst or a skin condition. The cause will be looked for.

What about an abscess near the anus?

It needs drainage promptly, and afterwards the doctor checks for a fistula.

Can I keep breastfeeding with a breast abscess?

Usually, yes, and it can help. You'll be guided on how to feed during treatment.

Can dressings be done at home?

Sometimes, after the first few clinic visits. You'll be shown how.

What is the cost of abscess drainage in Vijayawada?

The cost depends on the treatment you need, the hospital and room type, any tests, and the anaesthesia used. Dr. Naresh Veeranki gives a clear, itemised estimate after examination, before anything is booked, and most health insurance policies cover abscess drainage. Call or WhatsApp +91 83338 26666 for an estimate.
